Background

In the Ontario Budget of May 11, 2005, the government allocated $25 million to the Council of Ontario Universities to create new Ontario Research Chairs at universities across the province.

The Minister of Training Colleges and Universities stated:

“Ontario needs to be a world leader in leading edge research in key areas of public policy. Increasing the number of leading edge researchers at our universities will serve to lay the foundation for this standard of excellence, and ensure the next generation of graduate students are prepared to address issues and find novel solutions to problems of central relevance to all Ontarians.”

The fund is to be used to endow Ontario Research Chairs in one or more of the following disciplines:

  • Postsecondary education policy and measurement
  • Environmental policy and renewable energy
  • Health policy and system design
  • Biomarkers in disease management
  • Urban policy – crime or transportation
  • Educational achievement and at risk students
  • Economics and cross cultural studies
  • Bioethics

Eligibility

The Ontario Research Chair is held by an outstanding researcher acknowledged by peers as a world leader in the field. All Ontario publicly assisted universities are eligible to apply. The Executive Head of the University at which the Chair is being proposed must sponsor the University’s application.

Selection Panel

The Council of Ontario Universities has created a Selection Panel, to operate at arm’s length from the Council. The Panel is responsible for setting the selection criteria, operating the selection process and making the selection of the institutions for the endowment of the Ontario Research Chairs.

The Section Panel members are: David Strangway (Chair), Judith Maxwell, Arthur May, and Harold Shapiro.

The Secretary of the Selection Panel is Harry Swain.

The Selection Panel will engage internationally renowned experts in each of the eight subject areas to review the submissions.
